Being frugal is good. It save a lot of money. The bad part about being frugal is, it doesn’t leave you with much money to enjoy things you really like. One amongst such things is hobby. If we, however, give up majority of entertainment activities and hobbies of your life, there isn’t really much fun left in our lives.
As mentioned earlier frugality is not depriving ourselves of something, but making smart and efficient use of our funds. There are ways you can trim down the expenses of having a hobby, yet derive equivalent satisfaction from it. Here is a list of few hobbies and ways to cut down the costs.
Collecting Antiques
This is usually an expensive hobby. However, if you tackle it in an appropriate manner, you can save considerable money here. Search for small outlets that sell antiques at cheaper prices. Besides, do not buy any item unless you are sure this is the best deal you ca ever get. Don’t buy on impulse.
Games
If you buy games at a thrift store, you will get it for almost nothing. Before buying any of these games, search for stores where you can try them out. Another cheap way to enjoy games is playing them at your friend’s place.
Camping
If one of your favorite hobbies is camping, buying equipments that will last longer and in all the conditions can be quite economical for long term. You don’t have to buy too many tools, simply buying a sleeping bag, tent, and a utility tool would be enough for most people. Don’t buy things assuming you might need it.
Coin Collecting
Coin collecting can be very expensive, if you simply splurge at various auctions. Instead try to get old pennies from the bank. Contact old people, especially ones within your family for such coins. If you are about to take up coin collecting as your hobby, understand what makes you feel happy about it. Don’t simple do it because other are involved in it too.
Cooking
Cooking is comparatively a useful hobby, and money-saving too. But you don’t have to buy hundreds of pans and pots to pursue this hobby. You aren’t cooking for other, it’s for yourself. So, you can make use of old utensils. Simply learn how to cook food, and improve it gradually.
Gardening
One of the best ways to reduce your gardening cost is compost as much as you can. If you neighbor is into gardening, share some equipments. Harvest some seeds and store it till spring.
Hunting
You don’t really require special hunting clothes beyond the ones that keep you safe. You can simply add more layers during cold months. Instead of purchasing weapon for different kinds of hunting, focus on a specific type. Also, make sure you handle meat processing and packing materials yourself.
Movies
This may sound a bit cheap, but this idea really works: before you hit the theater, have some snacks and drink enough water. Do not purchase DVD’s of movies you have already seen in the water. You can also swap DVD’s with your friends. Instead of watching movie on the first night, wait for a week, prices would be cheaper. Or go to a discount theater.
Pets
Instead of simply buying a big pack of Ol’Roy, understand what your pet’s dietary requirements are. This would be a lot cheaper for you and healthier for your pet. Search for vets in your neighborhood that are well-versed with the profession and don’t charge too much.
Books
Instead of buying new books, you can either join a library or swap books with your friends. Buying used books is also a good idea.
Scrapbook
you maintain a scrapbook only to preserve old memories spent with your loved ones. You don’t have to decorate it at all. They wouldn’t add anything to the real content or it’s value. If you want to decorate it at all, don’t spend money.
Video Games
Make sure you are bored of playing existing games before you pick up new ones. Exchange games with your neighbors or friends. If you like a game that’s not available with any of your friends, don’t buy as soon as it releases. Wait till the prices go down.
Here are some tips that can help you save money on all your hobbies:
- Make friends with people with same hobby. You would be easily able to share thoughts and tools with them.
- Use less equipments. Don’t simply buy stuffs that you think might be useful in the future. Buy what’s necessary, reduce decoration.
- Don’t buy things as soon as they are launched. Wait until the price reduces.
- Understand what you truly like doing, and then make it your hobby. Simply taking up something because it’s trendy will not help you save money.
Some of the above hobbies may or may not match your choice. But the ideas mentioned for each of them would certainly help every individual to cut down the cost of having hobbies.
