Is Nexus One the Smartest phone of 2010?

This year, Nexus One seems to be the newest smartphone on the block. Will it give tough competition to a Droid, iPhone and the Palm Pre is what we’ve got to see in the coming days. The Nexus debuts with an offer of discounted price and a T-Mobile contract something which you did not get with other smartphones. Nexus has stepped onto a stage dominated by the iPhone 3GS. So will it overthrow the 3GS and steal the show, especially when the Droid and Verizon wireless already seem to have captured a sizeable portion of the audience?

As far as the users are concerned, good features do attract the cellphone enthusiasts but the costs of owning the phone are also something that need to be considered especially after the economically tough times. Here’s a Billshrink infographic that compares the costs of owning a Nexus One and its features to the other Smartphones currently reigning the market.nexus smartphone

The Nexus One has been compared with three other Smartphones, the iPhone 3Gs, Droid and the Palm Pre on five aspects:

  • When it comes to storage capacity, the 3GS that already comes with 16 GB and 32 GB availability, scores topmost whereas the Nexus One with only 4 GB capacity which is expandable to 32 GB comes last. Droid too comes with 16 GB capacity but it’s expandable to 32 GB unlike the 3GS which already has it available. The Palm Pre comes with 8 GB capacity.
  • When it comes to battery life talk time, the Nexus One tops the list with 7 hours talk time. The Droid comes next with 6.4 hour talk time while the 3GS and Pre give you 5 hours of talk time each. However the Nexus comes with the least standby time of only 250 hours whereas both the Iphone and Palm Pre come with a 300 hour standby. The Droid comes with 270 hour standby.
  • If you are enthused by photography you’d better go for the Nexus which comes with a 5 mega pixel camera with video recording. Even the Droid comes with a camera with the same configuration. The 3GS on the other hand offers only a 3 megapixel camera. But it comes with the video editing feature too, which according to me is not all that important for casual photography. For me the picture quality is more important which is possible with the cameras of higher resolution. The Palm Pre camera stands last on the list with a 3 megapixel camera with no additional features.
  • All the four smartphones are WiFi enabled
  • All the four smartphones are GPS enabled. Three come with Turn By Turn & Digital Compass whereas the Palm Pre comes with Turn By Turn and Navigation
  • All three Smartphones – the 3GS, the Droid and the Nexus- can take voice commands, but the Palm Pre can’t
  • The Nexus one comes with 16,000 applications whereas the 3GS with 127, 600 applications top the list. But the Nexus can multitask whereas the 3GS cannot.
  • In terms of price, minimum and unlimited usage plans, with or without contract, the Nexus One seems to be a cheaper option in comparison to the iphone 3GS which is the costliest. It compares favorably to the other two smartphones under consideration as well.

On, the whole, I’d vouch for the Nexus One in comparison to the other three. It’s a smartphone with good performance and features at a reasonable price.
