Gadgets Are Like Movie Stars…Their Demand Is So Short-Lived!

Posted on 18 January 2010

The world of electronics is so very similar to the showbiz world! In both these worlds, something new comes up almost everyday, people go crazy over the new and the old is shunned off in no time. What a pity! Last Christmas, I presented my niece with a brand new expensive mobile phone but this year she was crazy after another model that her friend picked up from the market. According to a 2007 study of ISupply, there are over a billion used cellphones in America of which 10 % are being relegated to landfills and 37 % to household redundant drawers!

Not only cellphones, but household electronic gadgets like tape recorders, electronic watches, kitchen and laundry appliances, also find themselves in old garages or in the attics. They gather cobwebs there! You keep them there where they get damaged due to non-maintenance and add on to the garbage of your house. Did you know that there are better ways in which you could dispose off your old electronic gadgets? You could sell off your old oven before it becomes all about gadgetstotally useless can’t you? You could donate your old washing machine to a poor family can’t you? And lastly, you could send your old plastic gadgets to the recycling plants and help in environmental conservation and revival can’t you?

Go For Recommence

Recommerce is all about selling your old commodities. There are some good websites like Craiglist, EBay and Gazelle that help you in getting good deals for you. You might want to sell your old mobile phone to an acquaintance but you might have to compromise with the price there. Let’s say, you can sell your old cellphone at 65 % of the original price. But the websites fetch you better deals than that. Of course, how much money you bag on a deal depends on the competition and the availability of the product on the website.

Donation Gets You Tax Deductions

Did you know that if you donate your old gadgets you are going to get tax deductions? Donate to organizations like Recycling for Charities (RFC). They are going to refurbish your worn out gadgets, sell them and donate about half the amount of money they collect to charity houses. Articles which cannot be mended are sent for recycling.

Send the Gadgets for Recyclinggadget recycling

If your gadget is not in a good condition for recommerce or for donating, you can send it for recycling. At least your environment will benefit as you can prevent toxic materials from batteries etc. seeping into the ground water resources. Many manufacturing units and retail outlets are accepting used articles for recycling and most stores give you credit points on your donations which you can use for making discounted purchases from the stores.

Having One to Spare Is Not a Bad Idea

Keeping a spare gadget is not a bad idea at all. You’ll have one for spare if your new one goes bad. You can also use it with a local SIM while traveling or give it to a buddy.
