Most people dream of quitting their day job. Each day, innumerable employees, sitting idle in their corporate cubicles, dream about living their life playfully, creatively, and without work-pressure. Most people want to live their life, and love their work.

Should You Quit your Day Job?

Not every one can quit their job to do what they love, simply because they have responsibilities and they would like to have a stable income. Having a paycheck, these days, is more important that fulfilling our dreams and doing what we love.

Before you plan to quit your day job, consider these questions:

• Are you comfortable taking risk with your livelihood?
• Are you ready to take up the responsibility of maintaining a business?
• Do you really want to do this everyday? It may strip the joy.
• Is your family supporting you with this move?

If you still want to quit your day job and want to go after your passion, congratulate yourself first. You have done that not many people can do. Next, instead of simply taking things as they come, a bit of preparation can make things simpler and earn more rewards.

Have a Test-Drive

Don’t quit your day job until you have had a test-driven your passion. If you want to become a full time writer, take up few freelance projects to check whether you are good at it. If within few days you realize turning your passion into full-time career is not a wise decision, you can continue with your day job. If you think you can improve, take up classes or evening course, and become good at it before quitting your job.

Do What You Love

There are things in life that you cannot avoid. However, most of the time when we are not at our workplace is wasted in doing unnecessary things. Don’t spend your time and efforts in doing things that you are not interested in.

You may have other freelancing job to do, but if you aren’t depended on that side income, you will have to spend more time doing or improving on what you love.

Working Towards Building Your Career

Turning your passion into career sounds great, but it’s not simple at all. Your passion, for instance, is to become a writer. However, to become a writer, you need much more than just writing skills. You need networking, brainstorming, editing, patience, and so on. If you are planning to become a full-time writer, you will have to work on those other aspects as well.

Create a Plan

Simply saying ‘I want to become a writer’ wouldn’t help at all. Create a plan that has the potential to make you a successful writer one day. Break down your goals into many steps and achieve them one at a time.

Don’t Hesitate to Set High Goals

If you want to be a mediocre performer, you don’t need any goals. However, if you really have the passion to do what you love, do it big. Your passion will help you reach there. Even if you don’t become the best author in the world, you will end up being a bestseller or an expert writer. Plan big and work towards achieving them.

Have Back-up Plans

Freelance income is not stable. Some day you might receive millions, some day you might not earn even a penny. However, this shouldn’t keep you from achieving your goal. Save some money for gloomy days.

Realize You Have to Work

Even if it’s your dream job, it is still a job. You will have to work towards it as you had to for you previous job. For the initial few weeks, it may all seem very interesting. However, you will have to do the job even on days you are uninspired, distracted or tired, just like your old job.

Knowing When To Quit

In some cases, you will know when to quit as the date is already chosen. For instance, if you want to become a law professor or study law, the admission date and joining date is already given to you.

However, if you have decided to start a new business, you will have to select and date and take the leap. You would be ready to quit the job when:

• You have financial back-up to cover financial risks and uncertainties
• Your side business needs more of you time than you are assigning now
• You are sure you will make money to take care of your family budget and finances
• You have been doing what you love for a while now, and you still love doing it

Turning your passion into full-time career involves hard work. However, it’s worth every second.
